Configuring the Alpha-10 Bar-code Scanner for Macintosh & Athenaeum.

19 July 1997

Occasionally, your bar-code scanner will "forget" its internal settings, and will need to be reconfigured. Fortunately, this is quick and easy.
Open the small user manual that came with the bar-code scanner. Each set of configuration is applied by first scanning the Start of Configuration code at the top of the left page, then scanning the setting and then scanning the End of Configuration at the bottom of the right page. You will need to do the following 4 things:-
  1. Reset the scanner
  2. Configure for Macintosh
  3. Horizontal tabs
  4. ISBNs

Reset the scanner

RESET

End of Configuration (on page 7)

Tell the scanner you are using a Mac

APPLE MAC II (page 15)

End of Configuration

Tell the scanner to use Horizontal tabs as a terminator

Hor. TAB (page 17)

End of configuration

Note: Athenaeum 2.5 introduced "Easy" Issues and returns, and you will want to configure the scanner for "RETURNS" rather than "Horizontal Tabs".

If you want to scan ISBN bar-codes, then

ACTIVE ISBN/ISSN (on page 29)

That's all! The scanner should store these settings all of the time, so you will not need to do the above very often.

Useful Tip

You may consider photocopying the above mentioned pages and pasting up the minimum codes onto a single small sheet. You could attach this sheet to the side of the computer monitor, making it very quick to reset the scanner. Such a sheet would have the following codes:

Start of Configuration

RESET

APPLE MAC II

Hor. TAB (or "RETURN" depending on your usage)

ACTIVE ISBN/ISSN

End of configuration
